drupal commenting spam

There seems to be a lot of pharmaceutical spammers posting to anonymous comment boxes. The drupal spam module takes care of this nicely and they have just updated it for Drupal 5.X.

Using Type - from subconscious to conscious

Choosing which typefaces to use for certain projects is one of the designer's biggest challenges. Early in my career I went to see a very successful creative director for an informational interview. The thing she stressed the most was the importance of learning the logistics of type as it separates great design from average. Although I had some fundamentals down and taken some theory I still struggled with practical application - what goes with what?

I found that experience and experimentation helped to train my eye. Utilizing universal design principals in different contexts increased my exposure to different design problems. Reading and studying books and articles on type treatment moved my understanding from unconscious to conscious. Deconstructing the “whys" of type. While making design decisions based on intuition was good so far as it went a deeper understanding was needed.

What typeface goes with that?

Creating a Drop Cap

Drop Caps are regularly seen in print but rarely on the web. Their function is to make the first letter of a paragraph stand out and to create a focal point. Creating drop caps using CSS is easy. .initialpara {text-indent: 0;}
P.initialpara:first-letter {font-size: 200%; float: left;}

Time Magazine's Person of the Year - 2006

Who was named person of year by Time Magazine? Well YOU were! The founders of YOUTube was my prediction but once again i am wrong.

"In 2006, the World Wide Web became a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matter.....But look at 2006 through a different lens and you'll see another story, one that isn't about conflict or great men. It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes."

Designing for Seniors

Usability & Design for Adults 50+

More than 40 million U.S. adults over 50 are online. "They bank, they buy, they search, they read, they contribute." –older, wiser, wired

Are we surprised? I was!. I think this group is often overlooked as a non-target audience.

The Internet enriches many seniors' lives, but most websites violate usability guidelines, making the sites difficult for seniors to use. Current websites are twice as hard to use for seniors than for non-seniors. – Jakob Neilson

Web 2.0's Visual Aesthetic

Apparently Wikipedia had a description of what the visual elements of web 2.0 are but based on a vote by wikipedian's this was removed. Interestingly enough the web 2.0 visual design list included gradients, shadows, catchy icons, reflections, and large typefaces.

Though the community didn't deem it appropriate to list visual elements in the definition of Web 2.0 it is obvious to even the non-discerning eye that a new aesthetic has emerged.
